Tips for Buying Cold Weather Hunting Clothing and Gear
It’s only a matter of time now before snow, ice and freezing temperatures grace Ottawa and Gatineau with their presence. But if you think a little cold weather is going to deter the avid hunter, think again. All winter long, hunters from near and far will gather across the region’s diverse landscape to track, perch, practice, and hunt; however, in order to brave the ice and snow, they’ll first need the appropriate hunting gear. Before heading out this winter, here’s how to buy the right cold weather hunting clothing.
Footwear
Nothing will ruin your winter hunt more than frozen feet. So while you’re getting decked out in hunting clothing, don’t forget an insulating pair of wool socks and waterproof boots.
Headwear
Deer hunters who hunt from downwind, will tell you that some combination of a hat and facemask is a must for your winter hunting clothing collection. Even for those not hunting downwind, without proper insulating headwear, your hunt won’t last very long.
Heater Body Suit
Think of a heater body suit as a sleeping bag that’s designed to fit your body. The suit has legs to help you move around, but your arms remain inside, which not only helps keep you warm, but minimizes movement also!
Jacket
Sporting your bright blue winter bomber on a hunt isn’t exactly going to keep you inconspicuous. If you’re serious about cold weather hunting it’s best to invest in hunting gear that keeps you hidden and, most importantly, warm.
Mitts
Whether a bow, rifle, or handgun is your hunting gear of choice, it’s pretty hard to shoot when you can’t feel your fingers. Many seasoned hunters will advise opting for a good set of fingerless mitten gloves, which will keep your fingers warm without unencumbering them. For additional insulation and warmth you can also add in a hand warmer heat pack.
Snowshoes
Whether you’re deep in valley backcountry or in the midst of Gatineau forests, adding a set of quality snowshoes to your hunting gear will make your trek a little easier — wherever your adventure takes you.
Underclothing
Just as outer hunting clothing is important for keeping the cold air out, under hunting clothing is important for keeping warmth in. Opt for compression leggings and shirts to keep your core warm and, as a bonus, mask your body’s scent also.
Don’t let the cold put a freeze on your hunting plans this winter. Stay comfortable by investing in a quality set of hunting gear and clothing essentials, your fingers and toes will thank you!
